“Whose Independence? Black Freedom Dreams and the Multiple Foundings of America”

Saturday, February 28, 2026

This panel discussion brings together historians to discuss the pivotal role Black Virginians have played in shaping American democracy—from the Revolutionary War and Reconstruction to the Civil Rights era and beyond. Together, panelists and audiences will reflect on what 250 years of liberty and bondage mean today, and how Black freedom dreams can guide the next chapter of American democracy.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Marvin Chiles, Associate Professor of African American History at Old Dominion University
  • Dr. Julian Maxwell Hayter, Professor of Leadership Studies at University of Richmond
  • Dr. Brian Daugherity, Professor of History at Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Kate Egner, Senior Manager of Digital Content at the American Battlefield Trust
