Closed Schools, Open Wounds: Virginia’s Education History from Massive Resistance to Modern Disparities

Thursday, May 15, 2025

This panel will explore Virginia’s educational history before and after Brown v. Board of Education, with a focus on the era of Massive Resistance in the 1950s and ’60s. We’ll examine how the policies and attitudes that fueled school closures and defiance of integration laid the foundation for many of the systemic inequities we see today. From segregated education to punitive discipline, the conversation will trace how these legacies continue to shape disparities in schooling—and contribute to what is now referred to as the cradle-to-prison pipeline. Panelists will bring historical, policy, and lived perspectives to this critical and timely dialogue.

Panelists include Danielle Wingfield, Valerie Slater, Chad Morris, & Wesley Ballamy.
