In celebration of Juneteenth, the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia invites you to a powerful and deeply personal program that honors the enduring legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History.” This special event will explore new dimensions of Woodson’s life through the voices of his descendants—both Black and white—whose familial ties have been revealed through oral histories and DNA evidence.
The program will feature a compelling presentation inspired by a recent NPR interview, highlighting the journey of one descendant’s discovery and the significance of reclaiming erased histories. A thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by esteemed community leader and former Secretary of Administration Viola Baskerville, will bring together members of the Woodson and Mines families to reflect on generational healing, the meaning of kinship, and the shared responsibility of remembering truthfully.
Join us for this intimate and enlightening conversation that speaks to the heart of Juneteenth—freedom, identity, and the power of historical reclamation.
